Orlando Murton was born in Haughley in 1891 (Stow Q2-1891 4A:836). He was the son of Orlando and Maria MURTON (née HART).
1901 census...Aged 9, he was at The Street, Herringswell with his father Orlando MURTON [54] horsekeeper; his mother Maria; sisters Jemima [26] and Florence [13]; brothers Robert [20] a blacksmith, Arthur [18] an agricultural labourer, Alfred [16] stable lad-domestic, and John [15]agricultural labourer. The entire family were born in Haughley. 1911 census...Aged 19, farm labourer, he was still in Herringswell with his parents, sister Jane [30] and brother Robert. Two, out of 13, children had died. |

Enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. The 8th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment had been involved in the disastrous first day of the Somme (July 1st), but were actually held in reserve and suffered few casualties. On the 18th they were due at midnight to launch a counter attack against Longueval, hence their casualties on the 18th were only 4 killed but losing 20 in the fighting on the 19th. |
